4 - The Evil of Fundamentalism

Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible tells me so…  - Fundamentalist Christian children’s hymn
In this post:

What is fundamentalism?

How does it differ from theism?

Can atheists or scientists behave
like fundamentalists?

  1. If we're talking about fundamentalism, I've often thought it's better to use another word. After all, what is the root, the "fundamental" quality of belief? It can either be philosophy and method, on the one hand, or revealed Truth, on the other; and those are not the same. Yet, we always look for fundamentals through any religious lens. The French have a better word: "Intégrisme." Intégrisme harkens to the word "intègre," which, in addition to meaning "ethical," means "whole" or "whole-cloth." Thus, religion, for the fundamentalist, means "accepting the scriptures whole-cloth, along with all the moral and philosophical precepts." That's much closer to what we understand today as 'fundamentalism'.
One more detail, related to Art's quote at top. Most Protestant hymns, even those penned by fundamentalists, are general statements of Hope and Faith. Very few are truly fundamentalist. In the quoted line of "Jesus loves me..." it's true that kids sing "the Bible tells me so." However, the issue is HOW one is "told" that through the Bible. A hymn that related the highlights of each and every year of the 40 during which the Israelites wandered in the desert... well, that would truly be 'fundamentalist' -- although also rather interesting!
